Designed by artist Miles Allen, the mural, which is over 100 feet long and 25 feet high, consists of a series of abstract geometric boxes in shades of green and blue. It adorns the base of a new five-story office building, dubbed Vantage, in Sydney’s Norwest Business Park in the suburb of Bella Vista.
Allen told Architecture & Design: “Whilst the design is intended to be eye-catching, it is important that the mural doesn’t completely draw attention away from the building above.
“There is an aesthetic balance – a harmonious relationship between the mural and the office space.”
He went on to add that the mural is derived from the work of the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. Mondrian, who was most active in the early 20th century, invented a style he dubbed ‘Neo-Plasticism’ which was made up of a white background with grids of vertical and horizontal black lines, and three other colours.
At the base of the mural, local flora has been planted, designed to blend in with the rest of the landscaped grounds surrounding the new building.
Vantage has 12,760 square metres of lettable office space and one of the city’s biggest floor plates, measuring 2,109 square metres. The building also features 569 car spaces over three levels and is designed with a National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) energy rating of 4.5 stars in mind.
Norwest Business Park was built during the Sydney housing boom of the 1990s. It has over 400 companies, which employ over 25,000 people. The park has Australia’s largest ice-skating rink, a hotel, a church, a medical centre, banks and several office buildings.
