Sundance Institute finds new offices in Los Angeles

[Published Sept 2011 and updated July 2023] The movie-loving Sundance Institute is set to move from its current Beverley Hills headquarters to a new area of office space in Los Angeles, developers in the city have confirmed.

Sundance, which was founded by screen legend Robert Redford 30 years ago, agreed a deal on 14,279 sqft of offices in the 31-story building at 5900 Wilshire along Miracle Mile.

The not-for-profit film institute needed more office space in Los Angeles to keep up with the demand for its services among the range of movie-industry professionals it works with and aims to inspire.

Staff at the organisation are expecting to complete their move to the building by the early months of next year. They will occupy the entirety of the eighth floor.

“As our year-round programs continue to grow, we needed more space and an open, creative environment that could adapt to our needs,” said Keri Putnam, executive director of the Sundance Institute.

“Prominently located where the city’s cultural institutions and media businesses intersect, 5900 Wilshire will allow us to better host and serve the artists we support.”

In sight of the iconic Hollywood Hills, 5900 Wilshire is also known locally as the Variety Building after the film industry magazine of the same name which counts the site as its West Coast headquarters.

The Miracle Mile office space skyscraper underwent a multi-million dollar and award-winning refurbishment in 2008.

Elsewhere in California, fledgling filmmakers are being offered the chance to find low-rent office space in San Francisco through an ‘incubator’ scheme being driven and funded by the local film commission.

Editor’s notes: As of July 2023, the Sundance Institute’s California office was located on North San Vicente Boulevard in West Hollywood.

The institute also had a New York office on West 44th Street and a Utah office on Kearns Boulevard in Park City.
