When in Rome, check out Carlo Scarpa

[Published October 2010 and updated April 2023] When in Rome, do as the Romans do, and for the next few months that could well mean checking out an exhibition relating to the titan of Italian architecture Carlo Scarpa.

A range of charcoal sketches are to be displayed at the Maxxi arts venue in the centre of Rome and a series of recordings of the great Venetian’s most important lectures are to be played.

The event is a must for anyone staying in a hotel in Rome over the next few months, particularly architecture enthusiasts of course, who will get an incredible insight into one of the leading Italian building designers of the last century.

Scarpa’s former assistant Franca Semi is curating the exhibition and he said of his former mentor’s sketches: “In black charcoal on paper, they constitute a self-critical document by Scarpa regarding the design and realisation of a number of his works.”

There are a huge number of hotels in Rome with bookings available, not least the Sheraton Roma or the Regina Hotel Baglioni, four and five-star establishments respectively.
