Competitors line up for Olympic offices in East London

[Published January 2012 and updated July 2024] A trio of organisations have been short-listed as potential studio and office space occupiers within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London, where a commercial district is taking shape.

The three groups have branded themselves iCITY, the Oxlane Group, and the UK Fashion Hub, respectively, and they aim to make the case for the high-profile facilities to become centres for the UK’s technology, leisure, or fashion industries.

London will host the Olympic Games in the summer of 2012, of course, and the buildings being vied for by the three organisations will initially be used as press and broadcast centres as the competition unfolds. It is anticipated that the buildings will be ready to be fitted out and fully occupied in spring 2013.

The park consists of two buildings with a combined square footage of over one million, close to half of which will be prime East London office space. iCITY, the Oxlane Group, and the UK Fashion Hub are each aiming to occupy both sites, and the Olympic Park Legacy Authority is now set to scrutinise their bids more closely.

“The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is already generating a huge amount of commercial interest, and the calibre of our shortlist is testament to that,” said Andrew Altman, chief executive of the Olympic Legacy Company.

“We will now go through their proposals in fine detail to make sure they can deliver a successful ongoing legacy that will stimulate future commercial interest,” he added.

The commercial district and the firms renting its office space are anticipated to contribute to the ‘Tech City‘ dynamic that Prime Minister David Cameron, among others, is aiming to create across East London.

It is hoped that whichever organisation ultimately occupies the offices at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will be able to create thousands of new jobs and training opportunities for people living in London and the south-east of England.
