The architecture firm in charge of the refurbishment, Siddell Gibson, which is working alongside the engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti Postawa de Hooghas, has been working on the project for some years. It was originally due to be finished in June 2010.
According to Siddell Gibson, “The rumbles of the economic crisis in the city hit the project and led the client to extend the whole project…and delay the entry of the building onto the commercial market to hopefully, a more favourable time.”
No 1 Kingsway has been constructed with the aim of achieving a high BREEAM rating, and with an eye to sustainability and a low ecological impact.
The building has retained its original facades built in the 1920s and will also boast seven new apartments located on the top two floors of the building. The ground floor will also have a restaurant, a sister to the popular Wolseley in Piccadilly, popular with London celebrities such as Kate Moss.
On the crescent of Aldwych are the historic headquarters of the BBC World Service, located in Bush House, and the Aldwych Theatre, Connaught House, Columbia House, Aldwych House, and Clement House, the buildings of the London School of Economics, as well as One Aldwych, recently rated as the fifth best hotel in London in an online customer poll.
