The deal was struck between the bank and the English Cities Fund (ECF), a joint venture between Legal & General and Muse Developments. The ECF collaboration has been behind a significant regeneration effort at St Paul’s Square in the centre of Liverpool.

Santander has made no secret of its intention to grow its presence in the northwest of England and, more specifically, on Merseyside. Its deal with ECF relates to 14,155 square feet of Grade A offices at No.4 St Paul’s Square, an integral part of the broader regeneration endeavour.

Sue Douthwaite, divisional managing director for Santander Corporate Banking, said: “We are delighted to be moving to No. 4 St Paul’s Square at the heart of Liverpool’s new business district.

“We have spent the past three years growing our corporate banking business in the region, and this move signifies the strength of our business and our commitment to businesses within the Merseyside region.”

Meanwhile, Darren Lawless welcomed the banking group’s commitment to Liverpool on behalf of the ECF. He insisted that St Paul’s Square quickly established an international reputation as a world-class business location. He also pointed out that Barclays, Deutsche Bank, and Standard Chartered are securing Grade A offices in various parts of the city.

Editor’s notes: In March 2021, it was announced that Santander would close its Bootle offices on the outskirts of Liverpool and consolidate its office sites into six locations across the UK: Belfast, Bradford, Glasgow, London, Sheffield, and Milton Keynes, where it would keep its UK headquarters.

As of July 2024, Santander occupied the 7th floor of 4 St Paul’s House.

At the same time, Barclays occupied space at Dale House, Wavertree Boulevard, Liverpool L7 9PQ. Deutsche Bank and Standard Chartered did not rent office space in Liverpool.
