Solar energy company expands in Oakland

[Published August 2011 and updated July 2023] Solar energy firm Sungevity has agreed to significantly expand its headquarters in Jack London Square in Oakland, it has been reported.

The new office lease will take the company’s downtown office space up to 68,000 square feet.

Sungevity will now have office space across two buildings on the square, 66 Franklin Street and the brand-new building on 55 Harrison Street.

According to Sungevity, the move comes on the back of its latest raft of new hirings and its expanded business on the east coast. Additionally, the firm’s recent partnership with home improvement giant Lowe’s has also necessitated the expansion.

“Jack London Square is proud to be housing prominent companies in emerging industries, such as green technology, that support local businesses including on-site retailers and restaurants,” said Will Miller, Vice President of Leasing for Ellis Partners LLC.

“This is another great step towards cultivating relationships with growing businesses focused on renewable energy and sustainability, a core value of Jack London Square’s ongoing revitalization.”

The new building on 55 Harrison is LEED certified and features water and city views.

“We are very pleased with the rapid growth of our business and the opportunity to share our success with the City of Oakland as we expand our presence at Jack London Square,” said Andrew Birch, Sungevity’s Chief Executive Officer.

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said that clean and green technology companies are “a priority focus for the city of Oakland.”

She went on to cite the city’s prime location, educated workforce, and its ranking as one of the top green cities in the US, as factors that would attract more businesses in the future.

Editor’s notes: Due to the pandemic, Sungevity laid off 400 employees in March 2020. In November 2020, the company was acquired by Pineapple Energy.

As of March 2022, Pineapple Energy merged with the publicly traded Communication Systems Inc., an Internet of Things (IoT) company.

Its registered name changed to Pineapple Holdings Inc. and its stock trades on the NASDAQ exchange under the ticker PEGY.
