History & Geography
Lying approximately 31 miles south of London, Camberley is one of Surrey’s most popular and beautiful towns. While it is technically based in Surrey, the town’s borders intersect with the counties of Hampshire and Berkshire as well. The town is slightly north of the Blackwater Valley and approximately eight miles south of Bracknell. The area around the town was never extensively farmed due to sandy topsoil. In the 19th century the Royal Military College was established in the area and later the Staff College. Camberley expanded significantly during this time, an expansion which was boosted by the construction of its railway station in 1878. The town also gained a reputation for fresh, clean air, from the large amount of pine trees in the area.
Economy
Camberley has a fairly diversified economy. One of the largest employers in the town is the electronics company Siemens, which has been established in the area since moving there in 2007. Until 2010 Sun Microsystems was also based in the area before moving to Minley. Doughnut giant Krispey Kreme UK are established slightly south of the town. Camberley is also a popular commuting town because of its excellent transport links to London and its physical beauty. The town also has a thriving retail industry mostly based in The Mall shopping centre in the middle of town.
Culture
Camberley boasts a public library, cinema and theatre as well as several other amenities. Recently work was finished on The Atrium, a massive mixed-use development with retail, residential and leisure facilities. These include a bowling alley, health and fitness club and cafes and restaurants. Due to the picturesque, heavily forested areas around the town hiking and rambling are popular activities and many come from London in the weekends to explore the local countryside. Sport is also popular in the town, with the local football team, Camberley Town FC regularly drawing large crowds.
Transportation
Situated to the southwest of the town is Camberley railway station which is on the Ascot to Guildford line. South West Trains connects the station to Ascot, Aldershot and Guildford. Direct services to London Waterloo run at peak times and run via Ascot and Richmond. On off peak hours passengers must change at Ascot or Ash Vale. Farnborough station, 30 minutes away by bus, hosts four trains an hour to Waterloo. Farnborough Airfield is located nearby the town and is renowned for its yearly International Air Show. Heathrow is located approximately 20 miles away.
