History & Geography

St Louis is one of the largest and most iconic cities in the US and an important economic and cultural hub for the Midwest. Located in the state of Missouri, St Louis is set on the bluffs above the western bank of the massive Mississippi River. The city is surrounded by the rolling hills of the prairie that covers much of the area. In 1673 two French explorers, Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette, explored the Mississippi River valley and soon the area had been claimed for France and was attracting French settlers. In 1764 St Louis was founded by Pierre Laclede and August Chouteau. During the rest of the century, St Louis was under Spanish control, but was ceded back to the French in 1800. In 1803 the region was sold the US as part of the Louisiana Purchase and St Louis became the capital of the territory. St Louis became the base for many exploratory expeditions heading west, including the famous Lewis & Clark expedition. St Louis continued to grow and in 1818 was reached by steamboats, which helped its economy expand. Immigrants from many European countries like Ireland, England and Germany came to the city and by 1860 the population had grown to over 160,000 people. During the American Civil War St Louis’ economy suffered because of the river blockade, but picked up again when hostilities ceased. Industry grew and the city prospered. In 1904 St Louis became the first American city to host the Olympics. The city kept growing and the population swelled during WWII. By 1950 the population was almost 900,000. After the 1950s the rise of suburbs diminished the city’s population. A series of regeneration projects were embarked upon starting in the 1980s and in 2006 the city received the World Leadership Award for urban renewal. Today St Louis is home to a thriving economy and Greater St Louis is the largest urban area in Missouri.

Economy

Historically the economy of St Louis has been fairly diversified and remains so to this day. A recent census found that manufacturing accounts for approximately USD 11 billion every year. Healthcare and social services are also a large part of the economy of the city, as is retail and professional services. The rivers surrounding the city have ensured that St Louis is a transport hub. The Port of St Louis is currently one of the largest inland ports in the country and every year moves millions of tons of grain, coal and salt. Among the largest companies based in the city are the brewer Anheuser-Busch, Emerson Electric, Monsanto, Ameren, Hardee’s, Arch Coal, Nestle Purina PetCare and Peabody Energy. Boeing Defense, Space & Security, formerly McDonnell Douglas is also based in St Louis. The sector which employs the most people in the city is healthcare, which employs over 34,000 people. Approximately 24,000 are employed in administration and support roles and manufacturing employs 21,000. The city has a total of 160,000 people in its labor force and an unemployment rate of approximately 11.7 percent.

Tourism & Culture

Like many Midwestern cities, St Louis is not known as a major tourist attraction, however, the city does have a tourism industry and many from around the region do visit. Probably the best-known icon of the city is the Gateway Arch, built to honor the city’s role as the gateway to the West. St Louis is also famous for its music scene, especially jazz and the blues. St Louis also boasts the second oldest symphony orchestra in the country. The city is also known for its unique cuisine. Among its specialities are toasted ravioli, gooey butter cake, Provel cheese, the slinger, the St Paul sandwich and St Louis style pizza, which is thin crust, Provel cheese and slices cut into squares rather than triangles. St Louis is also famous for its sports teams. St Louis has several high profile teams and world-class stadiums. The St Louis Cardinals are the cities baseball team, who play out of the famous Busch Stadium and are one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. The St Louis Rams is the city’s American football team and play out of Edward Jones Dome.

Transportation

The largest airport in the area around St Louis is the Lambert-St Louis International Airport, which is northwest of the city in St Louis County. The city itself is served by a light rail service, which consists of two lines which feature both underground and surface-level tracks. The city also has a comprehensive bus system, which is operated by the Bi-State Development Agency. Amtrak also serves the city and calls at the Gateway Multimodal Transportation Center which is located in the middle of downtown. Trains from St Louis serve Chicago, Kansas City and San Antonio.
