Seattle internet start-up to lease bigger office

[Published May 2011 and updated June 2023] An internet start-up company in Seattle is to move to bigger offices on the back of recent success, it has been reported.

Zulily, an internet company which provides temporary deals on baby products, is to sign a lease for 80,000 square feet of office space in the Cobalt building in Sodo. It is expected that the company will rename the building the Zulily building. The exact move-in date has not been specified, though it is understood to be in the next few months.

Currently, Zulily has its offices in Pioneer Square, where it leases 27,000 square feet. The new office in Sodo will represent a major upgrade in providing almost three times the amount of space.

The company is currently hiring more photographers, software developers, merchandisers and copywriters, it stated.

Chief Executive Darrell Cavens would not disclose the exact size of the company’s workforce. However, he did tell the Seattle Times: “We certainly will not be filling up all of the space when we move in.

“Our photography studio, for instance, takes up more space than an average desk. We’re continuing to add folks on a regular basis.”

Cavens added that he believed having all the departments of the company under one roof would ‘drive innovation’.

Meanwhile, house prices in the Seattle area have fallen much faster and farther than in the rest of the US, a report from real estate information company Zillow has recently found.

“Home value declines are currently equal to those we experienced during the darkest days of the housing recession,” Zillow Chief Economist Dr Stan Humphries stated in the report.

“With accelerating declines during the first quarter, it is unreasonable to expect home values to return to stability by the end of 2011.”

Editor’s notes: As of June 2023, Zulily had expanded its range to include goods targeted at young mothers.

The company had gone public in November 2013 and was valued at $2.6 billion, and, in August 2015, Zulily was purchased by Liberty Interactive’s QVC division for $2.4 billion.

In May 2023, Zulily was purchased by Regent, L.P. for an undisclosed figure.

As of June 2023, Zulily’s corporate office was located at 2601 Elliott Avenue in Seattle.
