Virtual offices ‘help companies slash their carbon emissions’

[Published September 2010 and updated July 2023] Businesses around the world are seeing their carbon emission levels dramatically reduced by using virtual office facilities and serviced offices.

Virtual offices give businesses a presence in major cities worldwide without incurring significant overhead or carbon output.

In fact, carbon emissions reductions of up to 94 per cent have been reported and independently verified at businesses like serviced office space provider Boardroom Executive Suites.

Nathan Jansch from the Colorado-based company explained to Officing Today how their clients have dramatically reduced their overall carbon footprints by using virtual office facilities.

“In shared office space, it’s based on economies of scale. You not only require less space because you’re sharing common areas and amenities, but you are also using fewer resources such as energy and water,” the virtual office space expert explained.

“Carbon emissions from commuting can also be greatly reduced as employees end up driving to the office only when they need to and not every day,” he added.

As well as offering businesses a route to a ‘greener’ way of operating, virtual offices and virtual meeting spaces can help companies significantly cut their rental costs, which are often among their largest overheads.

Editor’s notes: In July 2016, Officing Today rebranded as AllWork.Space.

For businesses and organisations seeking a physical office presence, the British Council for Offices (BCO) published the latest edition of its Guide to Fit Out in February 2025, offering expert guidance and best practices for office interior design, tailored for both occupiers and professionals in the built environment.

It was its 3rd edition since its first publication in 2011 and covered areas including hybrid working, smart tech, AI, and well-being-focused amenities.
