Private partners sign-up to build new offices in Glasgow

[Published January 2011 and updated May 2023] A pair of private firms have been signed up to carry out a construction effort that will see a new area of sustainable office space established in the east end of Glasgow.

The Clyde Gateway is recognised as an area of Scotland in need of significant redevelopment and an office building with roughly 65,000 sq ft of rentable space is now set to be established with that aim very much in mind.

Dawn Construction and the investment arm of the Aviva insurance group are the two private companies now involved with the local public planners, with the latter to provide £10 million in funding to get the project up and running.

A 12-month tendering process saw Dawn come out on top and it has been made responsible for designing as well as building the new area of Glasgow office space, with sustainability reportedly high-up on the company’s agenda.

“This is fabulous news and a fantastic outcome for all the parties involved,” reckoned Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council.

“The commitments made by Aviva and Dawn demonstrate that the private sector is keen to invest in Glasgow even at the most challenging of times across the property and development markets,” he added.

Urban regeneration efforts are being undertaken on a very considerable scale in and around the Clyde Gateway, where Glasgow’s ship-building and textile industries were once located.

Among the local planner’s latest success stories has been the conversion of a former housing office in the town of Rutherglen into business suites ideal for start-up businesses.

Editor’s notes: The Clyde Gateway project is Scotland’s biggest and most ambitious regeneration programme at over 2,700 acres and costing £365 million.

Also known by its full title, the Clyde Gateway Green Regeneration Innovation District (GRID) will provide 300 low-energy homes and over 1 million square feet for business office space, hotel, retail and other uses.

As of May 2023, 3,000 new homes had already been built and 5,000 new jobs had been created.

Tenants that have committed to Clyde Gateway include DHL, Network Rail, Ford, Police Scotland and a range of companies located in Red Tree business suites.

Red Tree is one of many flexible space providers in Glasgow and profiles of all of these can be viewed in this directory.

These companies provide a range of workspace solutions including private serviced offices, managed office suites and coworking desks.
