About the Bon Marche Business Centre in Brixton

The Bon Marche centre has a rich history and started life in 1877 as the UK’s first department store, and the 100,000 sqft commercial property was also the UK’s first steel frame building.

Following some restructuring of its business model, the store enjoyed great success and this caught the attention of Mr Selfridge Jr and, in 1926, he took control and transformed it into a Selfridges Provincial store. In 1940, it was then bought by the John Lewis Partnership which traded it as Bon Marché up to 1975.

Following some changes in ownership, the freehold of the property was purchased by British American Tobacco Industries (BAT) for £1,000,000 as part of its community affairs programme that was involved with the regeneration of inner cities areas of South London and elsewhere in the UK.

Following a refurbishment programme that spanned 1983 and 1984 and cost £3,100,000, the property became mixed-use offering retail, office space and studio space.

Following further changes in ownership and lease regearing, the building was purchased by the Lipton Retail Consultancy Company (LRCC) in 1995.

Between 2005 and 2007, the company carried out another major refurbishment programme and developed the business centre with air-conditioned private office suites that range in size from 100 sqft to 700 sqft.

Today, the building is the home of over 60 office-based businesses as well as high-profile retailers on the lower floors including TK Maxx, Cattivo restaurant and Foot Locker.

The entrance to the Bon Marché business centre is around the corner from TK Maxx, on Ferndale Road.
