About the Business Design Centre

The Business Design Centre (BDC) is a conference and exhibition venue in Angel in Islington in North London that also offers serviced office space.

The striking 3-storey listed property started life as an agricultural show venue in 1862 and the ‘Agricultural Hall’ soon earned the ‘Royal’ prefix and evolved into a venue for hosting balls, circuses, military tournaments, walking races and motor shows.

However, with the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, such events ceased being held and, after being requisitioned by the Post Office in 1943, the building fell into neglect.

The building was rescued from demolition in 1981 by the current owners who fully restored the property and transformed it into UK’s first integrated trade, exhibition and conference complex, which opened in 1986. In the 2020s, the BDC attracts in excess of nine hundred thousand visitors every year.

As part of the renovation, the owners integrated start-up and SME office space for rent into the property’s offering and it is now home to a vibrant community of growing businesses.

Facts about the Business Design Centre

Why choose the Business Design Centre flexible office space?

With over 30 years of experience in providing event spaces, showrooms and flexible office space in Islington, residents and clients know that they are in the care of a highly capable flexible working space operator.

The testimonials from tenants from a highly diverse range of sectors are a testament to that. The London flex space operator has also become a member of Investors in People, the association of Event Venues and London and Partners, too.

The BDC works hard to support local charities and actively supports 3 – these are The Morris Charitable trust which was founded by the family that owns the Business Design Centre and this has a particular focus on the Borough of Islington and local community projects. Since its founding in 1989, the trust has raised and donated over £2 million.

The BDC and The Morris Charitable trust jointly founded Islington Giving which aims to alleviate the effects of poverty in the North London borough. Since its founding in 2010, it has raised and donated over £5 million.

The 3rd charity that the BDC supports is The Brain Tumour Charity. The funding raised is used to help increase survival rates and eventually find a cure.

The BDC also supports the wider community and environment with its sustainability efforts. Sustainability is actually at the core of everything that it does and the venue has been a carbon-neutral venue for over a decade. It uses only renewable power, aims for zero waste and offsets the small amount of carbon that it does produce.

The BDC is currently working with Ecollective to move from carbon neutral to net zero and is doing this through reducing waste and increasing recycling, increasing the number of electric charging facilities in the car park and loading bays, and other measures.

It has won several awards in recognition of its eco-friendly efforts including the Exhibition News Corporate Social Responsibility Award on more than one occasion.

Of course, being an office space tenant at a large London events venue means that you are the first to know and enjoy easy access to a wide range of events and shows being held in the same building.

These include tech summits, recruitment fairs, sustainability conferences, business expos, food festivals, showcase events for Black-owned businesses, and many more.

Many are attracted by the number of facilities and services on the doorstep of the office space at the BDC – there are two restaurants as well as meeting rooms for hire within the commercial property, and residents enjoy access to the 24-hour concierge desk, onsite technical support, access to community events, and there is a Hilton Hotel and Pure Gym next door.

The BDC is also surrounded by amenities such as coffee shops, restaurants, pubs and bars and there is an Amazon Fresh supermarket just a few minutes walk away.

The BDC is also easy to access as it is just a short stroll from Angel underground tube station.
