About The Building Centre

The Building Centre is a building in central London that is utilised to promote innovation and inspiration for the built environment.

The centre works with leading individuals, businesses and organisations connected to the built environment, some of which have made the centre their base.

The Building Centre is run by a charitable body, the Built Environment Trust, and was founded in 1931 starting life as the building materials bureau of the Architectural Association. It was originally based in a different location in London.

With a rich history, its current building was designed by modernist architects Messrs, Taperell and Haase – an architectural practice known for working predominantly with reinforced concrete – the property was actually one of London’s first reinforced concrete structures and was originally built to house Daimler Motor’s London showroom.

The commercial property was acquired by The Building Centre in 1950 and required significant structural changes to transform the use of the property into an inspiring space conducive to hosting the general public and the architectural community.

The transformation took two years and the new home of The Building Centre opened its doors in 1952.

Today, parts of the building are open to the public with regular exhibitions and events on offer.

The Building Centre also offers collaborative coworking membership options to those working within the architectural, construction, design and creative industries.

Desk space memberships are also open to those from outside the construction and design industry.

Dedicated private offices to rent are also available at the property.

Facts about The Building Centre

Why choose The Building Centre flexible coworking office space?

The Building Centre is highly attractive to those looking for a collaborative coworking environment designed to support businesses and individuals working in the architectural, construction, design and creative industries, due to the networking opportunities, knowledge-sharing opportunities and, of course, the heritage of this unique building.

However, those from outside the construction and design industry are also actively welcomed.

Certainly, unlike any other modern coworking facility in central London, the ground floor of the building is open to members of the public that wish to view the galleries and exhibitions that are on show.

The building also has its own café and coffee shop that are both well-reviewed. Although, there are several amenities and services within just a few minutes of the front door including a Gails Bakery, Café Deco, M&S Food, Sainsburys, hotels and other shops.

There are also two underground tube stations within close walking distance that are served by the Central and Northern lines.

Whilst the coworking membership options are open to freelancers and businesses from any sector, those that work within the built environment sector are particularly attracted to working within the same commercial property as the highly regarded organisations from within the sector including the Built Environment Trust, the Construction Industry Council, and the Construction Products Association.

Those that are interested in environmentally friendly green office space or real estate, in general, are also attracted by the fact that the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) is also based at the building. The organisation, which was formed in 2007, aims to ‘radically transform’ the way that the built environment is planned, designed, constructed, maintained and operated.

One of the best ways to understand why businesses choose coworking space options at The Building Centre is to read the testimonials of incumbent members. Two examples of those can be seen below:

“CoWork Construct provides us with the perfect central London location to work from, meet with clients and collaborate with other built environment professionals sharing the co-work space and the Building Centre community.”

And,

“Since moving to the co-work space within the building centre our business has grown, we’ve made new contacts and we’ve expanded.”

Coworking daily rates at The Building Centre start at £40 per day, with half-day options available, too.
