Frankfurt is the financial capital of Germany and is ranked in the top 10 of global financial centres, packing quite a punch for a city with a population of less than 1m.

It is home to the European Central Bank (ECB) and is the geographical centre of the European Union (EU) so it goes without saying that it, and the country that it belongs to, is an active member of the largest single market in the world.

Since the UK’s vote to leave the EU, there has been a steady outpouring of money and jobs in the finance sector and much of it has been Frankfurt-bound. In January 2019, it was revealed that five of the largest banks serving Europe – Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Morgan Stanley had collectively transferred 750 billion euros ($857 billion) of balance-sheet assets to Frankfurt. They had to move capital to get EU approval to continue providing services across the territory.

An increasing number of companies are looking to rent office space in Frankfurt – so far, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup Inc., Standard Chartered Plc and Nomura Holdings Inc. have announced that they are considering actually moving their EU office headquarters to Frankfurt which will further justify one of its nicknames of ‘Bankenstadt’ – the ‘City of Banks’.

Many other industries are represented by large global players in Frankfurt – the ‘Big Four’ accountancy and professional services firms are present and have offices in the city – PwC’s German headquarters are located at Tower 185. KPMG moved its European headquarter offices to The Squaire. Deloitte is located on Franklinstrasse, and Ernst & Young (EY) is located in Eschborn.

The credit rating agencies Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s and Fitch Ratings all have offices in Frankfurt.

International management consultancy companies have office space in Frankfurt including McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group, and Capgemini.

International law firms have presence in the city including Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Debevoise & Plimpton, DLA Piper, Taylor Wessing, and White & Case, to name just a few.

Major advertising agencies occupy offices in Frankfurt including McCann-Erickson and Saatchi & Saatchi, and the largest food company in the world, Nestle, has its German headquarters in the district of Niederrad.

Many other industries and sectors are represented in Frankfurt and this is related to the fact that the city is the host to so many varied international trade shows. The Frankfurt Trade Fair (Messe Frankfurt) provides the third-largest exhibition site in the world and hosts exhibitions of engineering plant and machinery, to Christmas decorations. It also hosts the world’s largest annual automotive expo – the Frankfurt Motor Show.

There is a deep and supportive business infrastructure in Frankfurt – and some of that support is provided through the Frankfurt Economic Development GmbH which, apart from running startup competitions such as the annual Frankfurter Gründerpreis (Frankfurt Startup Award), also provides advice for companies looking to set up a business and open an office in Frankfurt. They provide information about necessary administrative processes and support foreign business’ introductions to the market.

We are often asked how much is office rent in Frankfurt? and the answer varies depending on the type, size and location of office space required – traditionally leased office space ranges from anywhere from €7.50 per square metre per month in Eschborn, to between €16.00 – €25.00 close to the airport, to between €12.00 to €40.00 in the city centre with the Banking District (Bankenviertel) achieving the prime headline rents.

Serviced offices and coworking space prices vary too – they are priced differently and the all-inclusive rents range from around €6 per day to around €14 per day with an average of around €500-€600 per private desk per month. Hot desking in a coworking space in Frankfurt is between €100 and €300 per month.
