About Ormeau Baths

Although its modern incarnation as a collaborative and supportive workspace was established in 2017, Ormeau Baths has been bringing ‘Belfast together since 1888’.

Originally built to provide public baths and swimming pools for the people of Belfast – many of whom didn’t have access to showers, baths or hot water – the 15,000 sqft commercial property in central Belfast has a fascinating past.

The classic red-brick style remained a bath house for over 100 years until it was closed in 1990.

Following funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council, in 1995, the property opened as a gallery and quickly came to be considered one of Ireland’s premier contemporary art spaces. It curated exhibitions by prominent international artists including Yoko Ono, Bill Viola, Hans Peter Kuhn, David Byrne, Willie Doherty and Alastair MacLennan.

It remained a gallery for 16 years until funding issues caused its closure.

In 2017, a group of entrepreneurs and members of Belfast’s business community came together to transform the building once again. This time into a coworking office space that has become the engine of Belfast’s tech start-up scene.

Within 5 years, it was home to over 200 artists, CEOs, developers, founders, podcasters, producers and start-ups, from a diverse range of sectors and disciplines.

For instance, Trov chose Ormeau Baths as its European headquarters office, and Energia has placed its innovation teams at the property.

Digital Catapult has built its state-of-the-art VR lab at the property, and the Best Of Belfast podcast is recorded in the building.

Pixel Mill, which is a branch of NI Screen, has built its game testing lounge at the building and also runs its incubator hub from it, too.

Ormeau Baths is also Belfast’s Barclays Eagle Labs coworking location.
