So named because the famous Eberhard Faber Pencil Company, which brought German lead pencil-making techniques to the United States, was originally based in the building.
The art deco-style commercial property was designed and built and the six stories building was the largest structure in the Greenpoint manufacturing district when it was completed.
The imposing property also served as a marketing tool for the company as it used its gigantic terra cotta reliefs as advertising hoardings to promote its products to pedestrians and passengers using the nearby ferry.
