About The Common E2

Founded in 2014, The Common E2 is a café, popular bunch spot, and architecture design studio that also offers workspace in Bethnal Green in the Winkley Conservation area.

Starting life as a private artists’ studio come gallery, it transformed into a cafe and dedicated architecture studio called Common Ground Workshop.

The design studio is also shared with a co-working space in which ‘deskers’ benefit from conversation and exchange with the local community.

The operators of the coworking space describe the concept as a work in progress where continually inspiring interactions and exchanges with the community take place.

With a focus on high-quality coffee and simple, healthy food the coworking space providers aim to create an environment for those in East London to collaborate and work comfortably from.

The main vision for The Common E2 is to create a friendly, welcoming environment in which to work, share ideas, meet and socialise.

Facts about The Common E2

Why choose The Common E2 flexible coworking space?

The Common E2 provides a people-centric collaborative workspace that is driven by a focus on people, the community and its unique offering.

An unusual commercial property concept, the original idea behind The Common E2 was to open a hybrid community cafe and meeting destination with a design practice and creative studio and a long-term view to introducing conversations between the community and designers and architects on creative processes.

Most creative practices operate behind the privacy of four-walled office space with only the reception area designated for public view, however, the operators of The Common wanted to challenge the intercom as the only channel between street level and the design practice.

This set in motion a project to bring creative practitioners and freelancers and the community together in one space.

This led to the creation of a space with one long ‘common’ table which would be used by everyone for work, meetings, eating, drinking and socialising.

This material and aesthetic mechanism created the name ‘The Common’ which is a nod to the term for a community park and the cafe would become an extension of this outdoor community space.

The story, concept and dedication to continuously evolve and challenge norms have proved to be extremely popular and have led to the success of this friendly coworking space.

And glowing reviews such as “Best place to work, meet new [people] and enjoy great food” confirm this.

The Common continues to evolve and during the pandemic lockdowns, quickly pivoted to create a click-and-collect service offering supplies and groceries to community members, whilst also supporting their suppliers.

Being incepted by architects, members enjoy thoughtful and practical design touches, and the workspace is filled with biophilia to support well-being.

Of course, its location is handy, too – this flexible workspace property is just a 5-minute walk from Bethnal Green Underground Station.
