Shared offices in Madrid give freelancers a boost

[Published Nov 2011 and updated July 2023] Areas of shared office space in Madrid are increasingly being utilised by freelancers as a place to collaborate and escape any sense of isolation.

The struggles of the Spanish economy have forced many people living and working in the capital to take up freelance employment but shared offices are providing a welcome alternative to operating from home.

SmartPlanet.com reported recently on a site in central Madrid where co-working has proved beneficial for self-employed IT programmers, bloggers, architects, jewellery designers and visual engineers, among others.

The offices behind Plaza Mayor in Madrid have been dubbed Utopic Us and are available for rent on highly flexible terms. Around a hundred so-called Madrilenos are currently working from the co-working offices.

Renting offices within a shared space keeps costs low and creates an environment that can prove highly creative. In addition, operating out of a shared office rather than a home office means freelancers have a chance to network and can potentially form worthwhile working relationships.

The Utopic Us offices are costing residents €75 for ten hours a week or €250 for unlimited access and there are now regular workshops being run by managers of the space, SmartPlanet reports.

The idea of sharing offices with unrelated operators is nothing new and small businesses in the UK, the US and elsewhere are increasingly working in this way, particularly during the early stages of their development and in creative industries.

Indeed, some of the world’s leading technology companies like Twitter have bought office space in various cities with a view to renting it out to small businesses and in the hope of fostering the next big start-up success story.

Editor’s notes: In 2021, Madrid was voted the 5th most attractive city in Europe for people, capital and businesses and the 9th in the world in the Global Power City Index 2021 conducted by The Mori
Foundation.

In the same year, Madrid was ranked the 6th best city for start-ups, technology and innovation investment in the IDI European Tech Cities of the Future poll.

In 2023, Madrid was the 4th largest metropolitan area in Europe.

In Q1 2023, the vacancy rate in Madrid city centre office space stock was 6.3% compared to 6.4% in the same quarter in 2022.

For leased prime office space, the monthly prime rent in Madrid’s CBD was 37 Euros per square metre and 12.75 Euros per square metre in the outskirts.
