Two floors of Holbeck Urban Village’s The Mint building are to play host to the new Asda office and the 250 employees who will work there. The move is planned for the second half of 2011.
The Mint, on Sweet Street, was completed in 2008 and has seven floors of Grade A office space as well as an underground car park.
Currently, Asda’s head office, which it set up in 1988, resides on Great Wilson Street and has 2,500 employees.
Chief executive Andy Clarke said: “We are proud to be a Leeds business – born and bred and this expansion of our space is further evidence of our commitment to the city.
“When Asda first moved into Holbeck in 1988, we were one of the only big businesses at this side of town. It has been fantastic to see how the area has flourished over the past 20 years and I hope our expansion in the area will demonstrate to other companies the great facilities on offer here.”
Asda was founded in Leeds in 1965 but became a subsidiary of Wal-Mart in 1999. It is currently the second largest supermarket chain in the UK after Tesco and has an operating income of GBP 638 million. The company employs almost 150,000 people and is currently in 376 locations.
Editor’s notes: In 2016, Asda vacated the building, however, they were replaced by airline company Jet2 which signed a long lease in the name of its parent company Dart Group.
In 2018, the tenant negotiated to rent a further 70,000 square feet at the property and, as of June 2023, are the sole occupier, and lease the whole building.
In 2019, The Mint was purchased from the landlord at the time Patron Capital and OXLO Properties, by Gatehouse Financial Group.
As of June 2023, ASDA listed Asda House, South Bank, Great Wilson Street as its Leeds office address on its website.
