Nike signs off on new office space

[Published July 2023 and updated July 2023] Sports giant Nike has signed the lease on new office space in Oregon next to its headquarters, it has been reported.

The company signed off on office space of 26,000 square feet in order to deal with rapid expansion and hiring, according to the Oregonian.

To be used by approximately 100 employees, the new space will be used for both administration and lab facilities.

The new space will be located at Woodside Corporate Park, 15100 S.W. Koll Pkwy outside the town of Beaverton.

A five-year lease on the property was signed by Nike. The new facilities are next to the space where over 300 Nike employees already work.

Nike was founded in 1964 under the name Blue Ribbon Sports by University of Oregon track and field coach Bill Bowerman and University of Oregon athlete Philip Knight, and was not named Nike until 1978. Nike is the Greek goddess of victory.

The Nike World Headquarters, also located near Beaverton, officially opened in 1990, and by 2001 had more than doubled in size.

Today the campus is made up of 17 main buildings all named after prominent athletes and sports stars from around the world. Among those the buildings are named after are John McEnroe, Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, Joan Benoit Samuelson and C. Vivian Stringer.

The largest building on campus is the Mia Hamm building, named after the famous American football player.

When added together the buildings on the campus boast two million square feet of office space and lab facilities. This is the equivalent of approximately 35 football fields. Over 7,000 employees work at the Nike World Campus.

Nike has been criticised in the past for the conditions in its factories in China and elsewhere. Allegations of worker abuse and unsafe working environments recently came to light in Indonesia.

Editor’s notes: In February 2013, Nike took further space at Woodside Corporate Park – the space had been formerly occupied by IBM.

In May 2013, Nike purchased two further properties, Woodside I and Woodside II, comprising 13 buildings for $84.5 million.

As of June 2023, Nike did not list Woodside Corporate Park as an address on its corporate website and only refers to the adjacent Nike World Headquarters.
