Twitter opens offices on Madison Avenue

[Published Nov 2011 and updated May 2023] Twitter has officially opened an area of office space on Madison Avenue in New York City in a major step forward for its East Coast expansion plans.

The company behind the social networking phenomenon was welcomed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg who said the move will create jobs in the city and add to the list of technology businesses with offices in the heart of New York City.

“We are proud to welcome Twitter to New York City’s growing technology sector,” said Bloomberg at an opening ceremony outside Twitter’s new offices on Madison Avenue.

“New York City has always been a place where big ideas are born, and we are working to ensure it’s the place where the next great tech success story is written – from incubating dozens of start-up ventures to bringing a new Applied Sciences school here,” he added.

Twitter’s newly opened offices are its first in New York City and they will be the California-based company’s headquarters on America’s East Coast.

Around 40 full-time employees will be working from the site immediately but a number of New York City officials have pointed out that the company’s influence goes beyond direct employment with hundreds of businesses relying on the platform for their own development.

New York City economic development president Seth Pinsky said: “New York City’s technology sector has shown tremendous growth in recent years, and Twitter now joins the expanding roster of high-tech companies that have established a presence in the five boroughs.”

“I would like to thank Twitter for their vote of confidence in the future of New York City, and look forward to working together to expand this critical sector of our economy.”

There are currently nine “business incubators” around New York City that offer ready-to-use office space to hundreds of mostly technology-focused start-up companies across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. Many have expanded and moved on to larger-scale office space sites in the city.

Editor’s notes: Twitter’s new office at 340 Madison Avenue was officially opened in October 2011.

In 2014, Twitter’s signed a deal for more than 140,000 square feet at 245 West 17th Street and 249 West 17th Street, adjacent buildings located between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. It is understood that the company agreed to rent more space at the buildings following this.

However, in March 2023, it was reported that Twitter was looking to sublease about 200,000 square feet that it occupied at the two buildings in Chelsea.

Twitter was rebranded as X in July 2023 following the company’s purchase by Elon Musk.

In May 2024, X was headquartered in San Francisco at Market Square, 1355 Market Street.
