Construction of the Co-op Group’s new BREEAM Outstanding head office will deliver close to half a million square feet of office-led commercial property. During its development progress, BAM Properties has worked with more than 100 local companies.
The headline figures show that roughly £8 million worth of orders have been placed with Greater Manchester suppliers to aid the construction effort, and £9 million has been spent so far on locally sourced materials.
“BAM has set out to deliver a programme of human investment here at the Co-operative Head Office that goes even further than they’ve asked, and we’re thrilled that it’s showing some real benefits for the people who live and work here,” said the company’s construction manager Tony Grindrod in a recent statement.
“We have really put our hearts into it, and the effort and adaptability across our suppliers and team has been enormous,” he added.
The Co-operative Group is the largest corporate employer in the northwest, with 7,000 staff across Manchester. Its new HQ is being built at 1 Angel Square and forms Phase One of NOMA, the £800m mixed-use development scheme regenerating 20 acres of Manchester’s city centre.
NOMA Director David Pringle presented plans for the Phase 2 office development at MIPIM today on the Manchester Stand.
The Group operates as a mutual business and is not owned by private shareholders. It employs over 100,000 people in its various retail, banking, insurance, and funeral service units.
Editor’s notes: In May 2024, the group unveiled its latest venture, Co-Op Live. The arena, located close to Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, is the largest in the UK and cost £450 million to develop.
