Deal agreed to develop Stockport office quarter

[Published November 2012 and updated August 2024] Stockport Council and Muse Developments have reached an agreement to collaborate to transform a significant portion of Stockport town centre over the next eight years.

Following extensive preliminary engagement between the council and the development group, the two parties have now set out plans to create a new car park, improve elements of the transport infrastructure and deliver a new ‘office quarter’ in an area of the town known as Grand Central.

The council has already bought the relevant land, so the development agreement means the car park, an initial office building, and a hotel should all be delivered by 2015. After that, more office space buildings will be added to the scheme on a phased basis until 2020, a statement from Muse Developments explained.

“Today marks an important milestone in the transformation of this key gateway to Stockport town centre,” commented Matt Crompton, joint managing director of Muse Developments. “We can now look forward to working with our partners at the Council to build on Stockport’s commercial appeal to deliver this stunning new office quarter.”

“The signing of the development agreement confirms both parties’ commitment to delivering a cutting-edge new office quarter and commuter destination for Stockport,” added Councillor Iain Roberts, executive member for economic development and regeneration at Stockport Council.

Muse Developments is owned by the construction services giant Morgan Sindall. It is integrally involved in several large-scale office space building initiatives across the north of England. In December 2011, the company was named the preferred bidder on the Stockport redevelopment scheme.

Editor’s notes: In 2021, Muse progressed with plans for Phase 4 of the £145 million office-led mixed-use scheme.
