Boeing to set off for new Alabama offices

[Published November 2012 and updated August 2024] The defence, space and security unit of the aerospace giant Boeing has revealed plans to consolidate its operations in the US state of Alabama in the coming months with a move to a new purpose-built area of office space in Huntsville. The company will take up 363,000 sq ft offices at three separate but associated buildings soon to be developed at a business park called the Redstone Gateway.

Boeing has long had an office space presence in Alabama, with cost savings and the pursuit of greater market competitiveness cited as the motivations for a large-scale relocation that takes several years to complete. Expectations are that Boeing employees will be working from its first Redstone Gateway building from spring 2013, while the second and third buildings are scheduled for completion in the first half of 2014.

All three developments will carry the Boeing name and will ultimately be used as one of the company’s main operating centers in the US. Its current activities in and around Huntsville include work on a variety of large-scale defence-related projects and launch systems for the NASA space agency, which has its Marshall Space Flight Center nearby.

Tony Jones, vice president of the relevant Boeing unit and the executive in charge of its Huntsville office developments, said: “Boeing regularly reviews its facilities to locate opportunities for consolidation and/or elimination of costly infrastructure to bring down overhead costs. This Huntsville consolidation is one significant example.”

The Redstone Gateway site is known as such because the US Army has its Redstone Arsenal base nearby. Boeing Defense, Space, and Security are among the largest employers in Alabama and Huntsville. The company is headquartered in St Louis, Missouri, while its parent operation has its multi-national headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. Both are multi-billion dollar businesses.

Editor’s notes: In August 2024, Boeing listed Redstone Gateway as its Huntsville address on its Google Maps profile.

In May 2022, Boeing announced that it would move its Global headquarters from Chicago to its 4.7-acre Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia.
