Investment risk giant plans switch to new London offices

[Published November 2012 and updated August 2024] The employee benefits unit of the JLT Group, one of the world’s largest investment risk specialists and financial consultancies, has revealed its plan to relocate hundreds of its staff to a new set of offices in the City of London. Based at two different sites elsewhere in the City, JLT Employee Benefits (EB) will soon move its operations to the St Botolph Building in EC3.

Expectations are that several hundred ‘EB’ employees will work out of the newly built office space site from August 2013, followed by hundreds more JLT employees working in other areas. So, the St Botolph Building will eventually be the international headquarters of the entire JLT Group operation, which has a total workforce numbering more than 7,000 people worldwide.

The business was formed through the merger of the Jardine Insurance Brokers and the Lloyd Thomson Group in 1997, with the former having established a strong presence in the Asia Pacific region and the latter a recognised industry leader in the context of the London insurance market.

“Moving to this new location is a landmark for our EB business and demonstrates our continued strength, ambition and focus,” said Mark Wood, chairman of JLT’s Employee Benefit Group in the UK. “This new state-of-the-art location is the next step in our planned success. I am delighted about this new office and look forward to welcoming all our colleagues, clients and partners next year.”

The JLT Group is attempting to acquire the financial services business Alexander Forbes, but that deal remains subject to regulatory approval. In 2011, the revenues of its EB business alone were worth £137 million.

Located in the insurance district and close to the famous Gherkin office building, the St Botolph Building is one of the newest office additions to the City of London. It is 14 storeys high and comprises roughly 560,000 sq ft of commercial space.

Editor’s notes: JLT Group was acquired by global professional services firm Marsh & McLennan in April 2019.

As of August 2024, Marsh & McLennan listed 5 Lower Thames Street in the EC3 Insurance district of the City of London as its London office.

At that time, there was 145,525 square feet available to rent in the St Botolph Building – enough space for approximately 1,300 desks in the heart of the City of London.
