Renewable energy firm consolidates London offices

[Published November 2012 and updated August 2024] The UK-based renewable energy company Lightsource has consolidated its operations in London as it aims to manage the rapid expansion of its workforce in the capital.

Founded with just eight employees in 2010, Lightsource now has customers all over the country and a workforce numbering in excess of a hundred. The business will now be run from the offices on the fifth floor of the building at 20 Old Bailey in the heart of central London.

Before the office consolidation exercise was completed, the renewable energy expert’s staff had been working largely from the offices of its equity provider, Octopus Investments. Within the building, it has now established its own more permanent presence.

“It is effectively like being a developer with an in-house funding operation and vice versa,” explained Lightsource’s chief executive Nick Boyle, who insists that his company is now the largest solar panel plant developer operating in the UK.

Lightsource has been involved in a number of relatively high-profile solar plant building projects in recent months, including one that saw it put together enough panels to power the entire Dunsfold Park in Surrey, where the BBC TV show Top Gear has its test track and recording studios.

The office building at 20 Old Bailey, into which the fast-growing renewable energy company has now relocated, is on the street that gives its name to one of the most important courts in Britain. Old Bailey, the street and the court of the same name are in the City of London and close to the Bank of England and the UK’s foremost financial district.

Earlier this month, development partners Stanhope Plc and Mitsui Fudosan UK announced that the Miller Insurance Group had signed up to occupy half of the 170,000 sq ft of office space they intend to build over the next few years at a nearby site on Mark Lane in central London.

Editor’s notes: In November 2023, it was announced that BP had acquired Lightsource.

In August 2024, Lightsource’s London office was based at 33 Holborn.
