LinkedIn has upwards of 175 million people registered as users of its professional networking platform and was founded in Mountain View, California. According to Crain’s New York Business, the company signed a ten-year lease on 40,780 sq ft of additional office space at the Empire State Building this week.
Anthony Malkin, president of Malkin Holdings, which owns part of the building and acts as its asset manager, says, “The Empire State Building provides them [LinkedIn] with the best campus in the middle of the city.”
LinkedIn staff have been working out of offices at the same site for several months, but the new commitment almost doubles the scale of space the company accounts for.
In early October, the same social network company officially announced that it had opened its first office in the Middle East at the Internet City development in Dubai. The network is thought to have almost five million users across the Middle East and North Africa, and the new Dubai office is now established as the company’s regional headquarters.
“Having a strong local presence will help serve our members better here, ultimately making them more productive and successful,” said Farhan Syed, LinkedIn’s director of global sales strategy.
Social networking businesses continue spreading their office networks worldwide. Facebook recently opened its first engineering base in London, much to the delight of local mayor Boris Johnson and others. Meanwhile, Twitter has steadily grown its office space presence on both US coasts.
Editor’s notes: As of August 2024, LinkedIn reported it had 1 billion users across 200 countries.
The company was also still based on the 28th floor of the Empire State Building.
