Payment technology firm to open new California headquarters

[Published October 2012 and updated August 2024] Square, a payment technology company, has signed a deal to occupy a new office space in San Francisco, California, from mid-2013. The firm’s bosses have been looking for quality offices in the area for some time, with a view to a full-scale relocation that would accommodate their growing workforce.

The building at 1455 Market Street in San Francisco has now been officially earmarked as the future headquarters for Square, whose technology is designed to simplify the process of making in-person credit and debit card payments. The name Square refers to the tiny card readers that can be plugged into mobile phones, and the company now sells them to retailers and businesses around the US.

Having opened its first office space in San Francisco at the Chronicle Building in late 2009, Square has increased its workforce from just 10 to over 400 during the past few years. Expectations are that close to a thousand people will work for the company at its new headquarters in midtown before the end of next year.

“Square is one of the city’s great technology companies and I am excited that they will continue to help build our economy and create jobs in San Francisco,” said local mayor Edwin M Lee. “Our city leads the way in attracting and retaining some of the most innovative companies in the world, with companies like Square at the forefront.”

Jack Dorsey, Square’s co-founder and chief executive, commented: “We’re grateful for San Francisco’s commitment to technology, and we’re thrilled the city will remain our home. Square businesses have already facilitated more than $300 million in commerce in San Francisco, and there’s so much more we can do to make a difference in the city and around the world.”

In other California office space news, it was revealed recently that the professional services giant PricewaterhouseCoopers plans to relocate over a thousand local employees and partners to new state-of-the-art offices in Los Angeles within the next six months.

Editor’s notes: As of August 2024, Square’s office was listed on Google Maps as 1455 Market Street.

Bohlin Cywinski Jackson designed the 175,000-square-foot headquarters, which includes a range of offices and workspaces, lounges, event spaces, coffee bars, and a library.
