Amazon, the e-commerce powerhouse, is reportedly looking for as much as half a million square feet of extra office space in New York City.
Amazon, which is based in Seattle and has a vast amount of office space on the West Coast of America, is already securing what could be one of the most significant office lettings in New York this year.
A recent Bloomberg report cites two sources close to the matter. One indicates that Amazon wants to start by renting 250,000 sq ft of new offices but also wants the option of doubling that amount of space at the same site.
Such a commitment to offices in New York would dramatically increase the company’s presence in the city, where it currently has an office at number 1350 along the Avenue of the Americas.
Amazon has reportedly contacted some of Manhattan’s larger office space landlords to discuss a leasehold deal in the coming months.
Technology-related and media-based businesses of various sorts are increasingly occupying offices in Midtown Manhattan. While Amazon is primarily an e-commerce operation, it is also behind some of the world’s most popular e-reading and tablet computing devices.
According to the latest figures from real estate analysts at Cushman & Wakefield, Midtown Manhattan is the eighth most expensive district in the world to rent office space. However, New York is no longer the most expensive city to rent office space in the Americas, with Rio de Janeiro comfortably ahead in that regard, according to C&W’s newest numbers.
Editor’s notes: In September 2024, Amazon announced that it would require its office-based staff to return to the office five days a week from January 2025.
In addition to returning to the office five days a week, Amazon said it would be hot-desking in the US.
