Tech firm FPC opens offices in Tokyo and Seoul

[Published January 2013 and updated August 2024] Fingerprint Cards (FPC), a maker of biometric components and identification technology, has opened sales and support offices in Japan and South Korea.

Headquartered in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, the company is keen to make significant headway in two countries it views as offering considerable growth potential for its business. New offices in Tokyo and Seoul, respectively, will offer technical support to FPC’s clients in these two relevant countries.

Key clients for the Swedish firm include mobile phone and other telecom companies operating in Japan and South Korea. FPC aims to see the use of its mobile fingerprint authentication technology become significantly more widespread.

IT and telecoms expert Tan Yeudong has been hired as a senior technical manager to lead FPC’s Tokyo operations and business development efforts in Japan. Meanwhile, Paul Kim has been appointed senior sales executive for the company in Korea, and he will decide much of what happens at FPC’s new base in Seoul.

“The Japanese mobile phone market, which has for a long time been a technological forefront, is currently one of the most important biometric solutions markets globally,” explained Johan Carlstrom, FPC’s president and chief executive. “FPC’s strong product portfolio, together with Tan’s experience and expertise, will further enhance our possibilities and position in the advanced Japanese market,” he added. Carlstrom was similarly positive about prospects for his company’s development in its targeted Korean markets.

A recent report from the real estate advisory giant CBRE rated Tokyo as the third most expensive place in the world to rent prime office space, behind only central Hong Kong and the West End of London. Six of the top 12 most expensive office markets in 2012 were reportedly in the Asia-Pacific region.

Editor’s notes: As of August 2024, FPC listed eight global offices on its corporate website; however, bases in Tokyo and Seoul were not listed.
