Banking firm launches Beijing offices

[Published January 2013 and updated August 2024] A mid-market investment banking firm called Lincoln International has opened its first set of offices in Beijing, intending to make further inroads into Chinese markets.

Joe Chang, who joined the global banking powerhouse Morgan Stanley, has been appointed to lead the expansion effort. He is now the managing director and chief executive of Lincoln International’s Chinese operations.

The opening of its first operating base in China brings the number of offices in Lincoln’s international network to 14, with the others in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere in Asia.

An increasing portion of the firm’s business is focused on meeting the needs of Chinese companies, primarily in the context of investment advisory services. The company’s bosses have made clear their intention to work closely with Chinese businesses interested in merger and acquisition opportunities outside their domestic market.

“We decided to open an office in Beijing now because of the right combination of timing and leadership,” explained Lincoln’s chairman, Jim Lawson.

“We see the volume of cross-border acquisitions by Chinese companies increasing significantly over the next several years.  Additionally, we found the right leader for the business – someone highly experienced in doing deals both inside and outside of China,” he said.

European and American corporate service providers are increasingly opening offices in Beijing and other major cities in the Asia-Pacific region, reflecting the continued economic growth in China and elsewhere.

For example, back in December, the Dutch management services firm Orangefield opened a new office in Shanghai to complement its offices in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Editor’s notes: In August 2024, Lincoln International listed 2501 T2, China Central Place, Jinguo Road, as its Beijing office address on its LinkedIn company profile page.
