The company originated in London but has operations around the world. It has been looking for an ideal office base in the heart of New York City. The building chosen is owned by Bloomingdale Properties Inc. and is located at 1385 Broadway, one of the most famous streets in America.
Cushman & Wakefield (C&W) has been acting on behalf of Bloomingdale to negotiate tenancy deals for the nearly half million square feet of offices at the site. It said Bloomsbury’s commitment to 23,500 sq ft had taken the building to 90 per cent occupancy.
In working from 1385 Broadway, the publisher will join the likes of the internet retailer Ideeli, the internet telecoms company ShoreTel, and the civic architecture firm Dattner Architects. According to C&W, the building’s recent capital improvement and renovation efforts cost roughly $55 million.
“1385 Broadway is a superior asset and is being pursued by a diverse, multi-discipline tenancy with a common objective,” said Jonathan Serko, C&W’s vice chairman. “These tenants are seeking premier office space in a building with a strong and reputable ownership in an ever-tightening market, and they have found it here, at 1385 Broadway. We are so pleased to have Bloomsbury join our prestigious tenant roster.”
Bloomsbury US will move to its new Broadway offices from the Flatiron Building on 175th Avenue. Bloomsbury also has subsidiary businesses in Sydney, Australia, and New Delhi, India.
Editor’s notes: As of August 2024, Bloomsbury listed 1385 Broadway as its Manhattan offices on its website.
