Carbon capture institute opens office in Beijing

[Published in 2013 and updated August 2024] The Global Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Institute has opened its first office in Beijing and praised the Chinese government for taking climate change issues seriously.

As its name suggests, the CCS Institute promotes carbon capture and storage technology as a means of potentially tackling climate change, which is widely regarded as the result of excessive carbon emission levels worldwide.

Given its position as the most populous and rapidly industrialising nation on the planet, China is seen as a key player in the battle against climate change. The country is moving to incorporate CCS processes on a significant scale.

Individual companies and institutions within China have already signed up to work on numerous CCS initiatives. They are now working closely with the Global CCS Institute through collaboration with the Chinese central government. The organisation’s new offices in Beijing are expected to support the process of expanding CCS across China.

The Institute’s chief executive, Brad Page, said on opening the office: “China has emerged as the recent fast mover in CCS. Indeed, it is establishing itself as a leader in CCS, accounting for more than half of all newly identified large–scale integrated projects around the world in 2012.”

“There is a lot of work still to be done, but based on the strong support we’ve received from the Chinese government and industry to date, I am very optimistic about the future.”

Page went on to suggest that the opening of its office in the Chinese capital reflects an intention within the Global CCS Institute to develop a more regional approach to spreading the word about carbon capture and storage as means of curbing climate change.
