Visiting the site earmarked for a massive overhaul this week, Mr Cameron was keen to show his support for what will be one of the largest undertakings of its kind ever seen in the UK.
Around £4.5 billion is set to be invested through the ‘Wirral Waters‘ scheme that will aim to see roughly 17 million square feet of mixed-use commercial space established across a vast area of former docklands.
Spearheading the effort are the Peel Group and the Wirral Council, both of which were very pleased to have the backing of the prime minister and confident their regeneration plans will have a hugely positive impact on the local area.
“To have the prime minister’s endorsement for this development is fantastic news for the people of Wirral,” reckoned Jeff Green, leader of the Wirral Council.
“I truly believe that Wirral Waters is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which will make a dramatic contribution to transforming the area’s economy and the lives of the people of Wirral and the wider city region.”
A ‘sister’ development on a similar scale has also been proposed for the Liverpool docklands area of Merseyside named ‘Liverpool Waters‘, with the Peel Group again working with the local council and looking to deliver close to a million square feet of available office space in the northwest of England.
Peel has been particularly keen to attract interest from Chinese businesses who might be looking to invest in the region, with a trip to the Shanghai World Expo having been undertaken last year with this aim in mind.
