Having already established an office in nearby Singapore, the company is aiming to capitalise on the demand for advertising space on its website among a wide variety of locally-based businesses.
Facebook has been banned in China since 2009 but there are a number of other markets in Asia that the firm is hoping to penetrate to a greater extent, with millions of people using its site in countries like Taiwan and Japan, as well as Hong Kong and Singapore.
With this in mind, the main focus of staff at Facebook’s soon-to-be-opened Hong Kong offices will be sales and the general promotion of its brand in the Far East.
Commenting on the office space plans, Blake Chandlee, vice president and commercial director of Facebook’s Asia-Pacific operations, said: “With millions of people in Hong Kong and Taiwan using Facebook daily to connect with the people, brands and causes they care about, Facebook provides a powerful combination of reach and engagement for advertisers.
“By continuing to build our presence in the region, Facebook will be able to directly provide full support to advertisers here and help them create and execute campaigns that will have a meaningful impact on their businesses.”
In related news, reports this week have suggested that the same social networking giant is set to move to new headquarters in California, where its staff have been working out of office space for the past six years.
Meanwhile, Facebook’s rival in a variety of contexts, Google, recently bought a new office block in New York and agreed leases on several spaces in different parts of Los Angeles.
Editor’s notes: In May 2023, several sources listed Facebook’s Hong Kong offices as One Taikoo Place, 970 Kings Road, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong.
One Taikoo Place was completed in 2018 and is part of the larger Taikoo Place development scheme in which other high-profile companies that rent office space including Berluti, Fendi, Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL), and LVMH.
One Taiko Place provides 1 million square feet of gross space and was pre-certified LEED Platinum for its environmentally friendly credentials.
It is understood that Facebook moved into its new office in April 2019 and that it rents approximately 70,000 square feet of space on the top four floors of One Taikoo Place.
It is also understood that the fit-out includes an upstairs canteen, a games space, several libraries, a micro-kitchen on each of the lower floors, mother’s rooms, and an IT Helpdesk.
