Major West London office plans approved

[Published September 2012 and updated August 2024] Plans that could soon see close to a million square feet of new offices added to supplies in West London have been approved by relevant authorities in the capital, it has emerged.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council has resolved to grant consent for Capital & Counties Properties (CapCo) to proceed with an expansive mixed-use development scheme focused on the areas around Earls Court and West Kensington.

In what CapCo is referring to as an Opportunity Area, around 6,700 new homes, dozens of new retail outlets, and 911,714 sq ft of new offices should soon be established.

Plans have been created around ideas drawn up by the prominent British architect Sir Terry Farrell and will be based on having four separate ‘urban villages’ and a thoroughly modern ’21st-century high street’. The cost of the ambitious scheme is expected to run into several billion pounds before completion, but the hope is that some 12,000 new jobs will be created as a result of the project.

“We are pleased by the Council’s decision to pass the resolution to grant outline planning consent for the Earls Court Masterplan,” said Ian Hawksworth, chief executive of CapCo.”The proposed scheme will offer a multi-billion pound investment in both London and the local community, creating thousands of new homes and jobs.”

The West End of London is the second most expensive area in the world to rent top-quality office space, behind only Hong Kong, where space for such developments has long been at a premium.
