Mayor gives green light to London offices overhaul

[Published December 20110 and updated May 2023] Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, has given the green light to a project that will see a former power station revamped and turned into a new area of office space in the capital.

Shops and leisure facilities are also part of the plans that the Real Estate Opportunities company has put forward for the redevelopment of the Battersea Power Station, a Grade II*the  listed building in South London.

Having gone unused and closed to the public since it was decommissioned in 1983, the power station now looks set to offer some high-quality London offices and to be an integral part of a larger regeneration effort covering 20 acres of nearby land.

Several hundred million pounds are to be invested into revamping the power station and the surrounding areas, with the Mayor and other stakeholders confident of seeing thousands of new jobs brought to the area.

“Battersea Power Station has long been an iconic feature of the capital’s skyline, and these plans will make sure that status is retained for years to come,” Mr Johnson said.

“The building was once a vital motor helping to power the capital. With its future secured through this regeneration, it will once again play a part in driving London’s economy.”

Part of the regeneration effort will aim to improve transport links from offices in South London to the rest of the city and its surrounding areas, planners have explained.

In other London office space news, the asset management operation of the well-known banking group JP Morgan recently agreed on a deal worth close to £557 million to acquire a “well-tenanted” office building in ‘the City’.

Meanwhile, British Land and Oxford Properties have agreed the terms of a joint venture that will see them create more than half a million square feet of new office space in central London, with ‘the Cheesegrater’ soon to be established in EC3.

Editor’s notes: Battersea Power Station is located in Nine Elms in Battersea and the final phase of the redevelopment completed in 2022.

The 42-acre scheme is home to a wide range of shops, restaurants and leisure venues with many being located on its pedestrianised high street, Electric Boulevard.

The scheme is also home to over 250 apartments and the office space is tenanted by architects Foster + Partners.

It was announced in 2022 that technology firm Apple would also be renting 495,000 square feet over 6 floors at the scheme. As of March 2023, the firm was in the process of moving its 1,400 London-based staff into the building to consolidate its London base.

Apple advised that the workspace has been designed to enhance in-person collaboration as the company looks to maximise the time spent by employees in the office.
