Office space in Berlin looks set to help a new generation of technology-based start-up companies after an ambitious development deal was struck between a German publishing giant and a Californian ‘business accelerator’.
The publisher is Axel Springer, one of the largest multimedia businesses in Europe, while the start-up accelerator calls itself the Plug and Play Tech Center in reference to its technology enterprise incubator in Silicon Valley. The agreement reached in recent days means fledgling German and European companies now have a new potential source of support for their early development.
Seeding money is a key part of the support set to be offered through the collaboration but so too is office in Berlin. Qualifying companies will be given between €10,000 and €50,000 and have access to quality offices and intensive mentoring for a period of up to six months.
However, the partnering agreement is designed not only to support small firms from Germany in their efforts to grow in Europe but also those from the US with similar ambitions on the opposite side of the Atlantic. Companies selected for specialist support through the ‘Axel Springer Plug and Play’ scheme will also have the chance to spend time working out of the original Plug and Play Tech Centre in California.
“The bridge between Berlin and Silicon Valley provided by ‘Axel Springer Plug and Play’ can impact the success of entrepreneurs in thinking bigger and globally,” said Saeed Amidi, chief executive and founder of the Plug and Play Tech Center. “Berlin can become the center of media and technology start-up entrepreneurs in Europe.”
The Axel Springer Plug and Play scheme will officially launch in March 2013 with two programme cycles scheduled for the current calendar year. Plug and Play claims to have a community of more than 300 start-up companies under its organisational umbrella, while Axel Springer has roughly 12,800 employees around the world.
