PNC to build Pittsburgh skyscraper

[Published May 2011 and updated June 2023] Financial services outfit PNC is set to start construction of a massive skyscraper in downtown Pittsburgh.

The 40-storey tall USD 400 million skyscraper will be ‘the greenest skyscraper in the world’ according to PNC.

Over the last year, PNC has acquired seven properties on Wood Street near Fifth Avenue, where the skyscraper is to be built. The building will be adjacent to the group’s current headquarters office located at One PNC Plaza. PNC is currently the sixth-largest bank by deposits in the US.

When completed, the skyscraper will provide PNC with 800,000 square feet of office space and will house approximately 3,000 employees of the company. According to PNC its number of employees has approximately doubled over the last decade and now stands at 8,000, many of whom are housed in buildings spread across the city.

Gary Saulson, PNC’s director of real estate was quoted in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as saying: “We think the Tower at PNC Plaza will be a destination.

“We think it will draw people from around the world who will want to come and see this building and, hopefully, we’ll find some people who will want to emulate it.

PNC has stated that the skyscraper will easily achieve the highest environmental rating from the US Green Building Council and will be built with sustainability foremost.

Construction is expected to begin in 2012 and is slated to be finished in 2015.

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said: “This exciting development Downtown is the continuation of what I believe is the third renaissance that’s happening right now in the city of Pittsburgh.”

Currently, downtown Pittsburgh has 151 skyrise buildings and is the 22nd largest urban area in the US.

Editor’s notes: Completed in 2015, the Tower at PNC Plaza offers 800,000 square feet of office space and as of June 2023, still exceeded the criteria for a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum-certified building.

In 2022, PNC remained the sixth-largest bank in the U.S. by deposits holding $442 million.

JPMorgan holding $2,441 million was the largest, followed by Bank of America ($2,042 million), Wells Fargo ($1,421 million), Citibank ($1,400 million), and U.S. Bank ($465 million).
