Serviced office space ‘makes steps in Japan’

[Published Sept 2011 and updated July 2023] Japan is currently seeing a rise in economic, slimmed-down serviced office space, it has been reported.

Several new operators are attempting to cash in on what they think will become a new trend towards smaller, more streamlined serviced offices, rather than excessively large office developments.

Compass Offices is an example of a company that has done well with the serviced office model, operating offices in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore. The outfit has just announced it is to open another facility in Hong Kong in October.

The latest company to venture into the market is Space Design, which is opening its new BUREX office facility in Tokyo.

BUREX Toranomon, as the new project has been dubbed, is aimed at those who want to cut down on office space costs but keep a prestigious location.

“We have noticed firms in Tokyo slimming down after the events of 3.11. More companies are trying to keep operations as flexible and focused as possible. We hope that our un-furnished serviced office facilities can give firms another option for smart operations in Japan,” said Ruth Shiraishi who leads the multi-national business development team at Space Design.

She added: “I am proud to say our office solutions are probably the most flexible and fair in the current market and I hope we will have the chance to offer our best proposal to firms trying to sharpen their strategy in this volatile market situation.”

BUREX units consist of 177 square feet each and come with independent heating and lighting units, a reception service and the option to rent meeting rooms. The facility is located just near the Hotel Okura, a 5-minute walk from both Kamiyacho and Toranomon stations on the Hibiya and Ginza subway lines.

Space Design also operates serviced apartments in Tokyo and Yokohama.

Editor’s notes: As of July 2023, Compass Offices also operated in Ho Chi Minh City, Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Shanghai, Melbourne and Sydney.

BUREX operated both furnished and unfurnished serviced offices with 3 buildings in Tokyo – BUREX FIVE, BUREX KOJIMACHI and BUREX KYOBASHI.
