Stockport office plans take major step forward

[Published January 2012 and updated June 2024] A regeneration plan focussed on central Stockport that will have high-quality office space as its principal element has moved closer to realisation with the local council’s naming of a preferred development partner.

Muse Developments now looks set to work with the Stockport Council to deliver a new area of offices available for rent, a hotel, and improved car parking facilities.

The scheme, budgeted at around £140 million, aims to revitalise an area of Stockport, Greater Manchester, generally referred to as Grand Central. The competitive process of selecting a preferred developer for the initiative began in early 2011 and came down to a battle between Muse and Orbit Developments.

“We have been through a rigorous, fair and transparent process,” said Dave Goddard, leader of the Stockport Council.

“The recommendation to the council’s executive is that Muse be appointed as the council’s proposed development partner for this key town centre regeneration scheme, and I believe this will receive strong support from across the council.”

Speaking on behalf of Muse Developments, the company’s joint managing director Matt Compton said: “The site will arguably become an exceptional business location and will make a significant contribution to the continued renaissance of Stockport town centre.”

Muse is part of the Morgan Sindall Group, one of the UK’s largest construction and office space fit-out businesses. The company has offices in various British cities, and its team based in Salford Quays is set to take the lead on the Stockport regeneration effort.

For its part, Salford Quays is fast becoming one of the most popular and sought-after locations for renting office space in Greater Manchester. The MediaCityUK redevelopment has already helped to rejuvenate large parts of the local area.

Editor’s notes: Muse signed the development agreement for Grand Central – the new office district next to the train station in the town centre in October 2012.

In July 2021, the developer submitted plans for an additional 64,000 sqft office at the scheme. This signified Phase 4 of the £145 million office-led mixed-use Stockport Exchange scheme that, on completion, would deliver 375,000 sqft of new office space and workspace in Stockport.
