Mercer to move into new development

[Published March 2011 and last updated July 2026] Investment services giant Mercer has recently announced that it has agreed to move into new office space in G1 – Glasgow’s new city centre office development.

Located in what was once Glasgow’s Victorian-era post office building, G1 has been totally refurbished and redeveloped to provide modern office space.

Mercer is to rent two floors of G1, as well as rooms on the very top floor of the building, for client meetings. These rooms afford an unrivalled view over central Glasgow.

Steven Blackie, Mercer’s business leader in Scotland, commented: “This is an exciting time of development for us in Scotland as we particularly plan for the expansion of our investment, risk management, outsourcing and consulting businesses. The move demonstrates our continued commitment to growth and investment in Scotland.

“One of the key benefits is to ensure that Mercer’s 200 employees from nearby Blythswood Square and Alhambra House offices can come together under one roof and work even more closely as a team, whilst also allowing efficiency gains from operating on a single site.”

G1 has kept the original façade of the old post office and has added a glass roof extension. The building is located on George Square, near Queen Street Station and Central Station.

Energy-efficient heating and lighting make the building one of the most sustainable and eco-friendly in central Glasgow.

Mercer plans to make the move in early July.

Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) represented Mercer in the deal. JLL’s Angela Pirie said: “Following a detailed review of Mercer’s occupational requirements in Glasgow, we are delighted to have identified suitable office space and negotiated this lease on their behalf, matching a leading international consultancy firm with world-class office space.”

Tenants of G1 already include Maclay, Murray & Spens, Ernst & Young, Gardiner & Theobald, Jamie’s Italian and Browns Brasserie.

There are still 7,500 square feet of office space on the fourth floor of the development which have yet to be leased.

Editor’s notes: Following the refurbishment, the property was awarded the British Council of Offices (BCO) Best Commercial Office Award in 2011 following the substantial regeneration of the property, and achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating for energy efficiency.

As of June 2023, Mercer remained in occupation at the property.

In 2017, Maclay, Murray & Spens merged with rival law firm Dentons, which, as of June 2023, rented office space at the G1 Building on George Square.

As of June 2023, Ernst & Young was still in occupation at the property, as were Gardiner & Theobald and Browns Brasserie.

As of June 2023, Jamies Italian no longer existed.

In the same month, there was 15,531 square feet of Grade-A office space available to rent at the G1 Building.

As of July 2026, there was 8,179 square feet of office space available to lease at the G1 Building on the 2nd floor. At the time, 12,333 square feet was under offer on the first floor.

The quoted rent on both floors was £40 per square foot per annum.
