History & Geography

The capital of Idaho is located in the west of the state, approximately 41 miles from the border with neighboring Oregon and about 100 miles north of Oregon. To the northeast of the city are the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, and in nearby Owyhee County are the Owyhee Mountains. To the west of the city is the Boise River. The city derives its name from French Canadian fur trappers who named the nearby river ‘la Riviere Boisee’, meaning ‘the wooded river’. Fort Boise was established in 1863 during the Civil War in response to several massacres by Native Americans of settlers on the Oregon Trail. The site was chosen because it was near the Oregon Trail and Boise Basin, the current site of Idaho City. A new town quickly grew up around the fort and in less than a year, Boise was incorporated as a city. At that time Lewiston was the capital of Idaho Territory, which in its original incarnation was larger than Texas. However, after the creation of Montana Territory Idaho became much smaller. In 1866 Boise was selected as the capital for the territory and later became the state capital. In 1871 the US Assay Office was designed and built by Alfred B. Mullet and today is a national historic landmark. Boise’s population continued to grow rapidly and the city prospered. Nearby mines and the proximity of the Oregon Trail ensured that the city became a major commercial hub. At the beginning of the 20th century, the construction of the Arrowrock Dam and irrigation efforts in the area meant that Boise’s population continued to grow and the city thrived. Boise avoided much of the ravages of the Great Depression and during WWII was an important training center for the US Air Force. Today the city is the most populous city in the state of Idaho and is an important commercial and cultural hub.

Economy

United Airlines started life in the city as Varney Air Service, and still serves Boise Airport, though is not headquartered there. Boise has a large Basque community which is an important part of the city’s culture. It is the largest Basque community in the US and the fifth-largest in the world. Located in downtown Boise is the ‘Basque Block’ a culturally vibrant area of restaurants and bars in the Basque tradition. Every five years the festival Jaialdi is held, featuring dancing, food and arts. Other popular festivals in Boise are the Gene Harris Jazz Festival, the Idaho Shakespeare Festival and the Treefort Music Fest. Every Autumn the city also hosts the Idaho International Film Festival. Boise does not have a thriving tourism industry, however, there are many activities for visitors, one of the most popular being First Thursday Gallery Stroll. This is a tour of the city’s galleries, held on the first Thursday of every month. Boise has also become a fairly popular destination for trade fairs and other functions. The Boise Center on the Grove is the city’s leading convention centre, and is located in the heart of downtown and features 85,000 square feet of space. The area surrounding Boise is also popular for outdoor recreation such as hiking and mountain biking.

Transportation

Boise is served by Boise Airport, which has recently been renovated to serve more passengers every year. The airport is served by Delta Airlines, US Airways, United, Horizon Air and Southwest Airlines. The city itself has a fairly comprehensive public transportation system, however, like in many US cities, most residents travel by car. There is a large bus network operated by the company ValleyRide, and a streetcar system is currently being planned, though a completion date has not yet been announced. Boise also has the seventh-highest amount of bicycle commuters of any city in the US and has an efficient system of bike lanes.
