History & Geography

Nagpur is the third-largest city in the province of Maharashtra and one of the most beautiful cities in India. The city sits on the Deccan Plateau approximately 300 metres above sea level with its largest geographical feature being the man-made lake of Ambazari. The region around Nagpur was ruled by a number of dynasties and kingdoms, including the Vakataka dynasty and the kingdoms of the Rashtrakutas, Badami Chalukyas and Yadavas. The city of Nagpur was founded by Bakht Buland in the 17th century and grew rapidly as a trading centre. Upon Buland’s death, the city came under the rule of Chand Sultan who fortified the city and bolstered its infrastructure. In the mid 18th century the city fell under the sway of the Maratha rulers and was governed by them until the British defeated them in the Second Anglo-Maratha War in 1803. The British then took control of the city and made it the capital of their central provinces administrative region. In the early 20th century the city became a centre of the textile industry with several large factories being built. Nagpur also became the birthplace of the Non-Cooperation Movement, an important effort in the move towards eventual independence for India. Later in the 1920s, Nagpur was the scene of violent Hindu-Muslim riots which saw wholesale destruction and left several dead. After Indian independence, Nagpur became the capital of the state of Madhya Pradesh, which was then quickly renamed Bombay State. This, in turn, was eventually split into the two states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. As the 20th century progressed the city expanded and it’s infrastructure grew more advanced. Later the city was the scene of the rising Dalit Buddhist Movement. In 1994 the 115 people died in the city when a protest went wrong and resulted in a stampede. Today Nagpur is an important centre of the IT industry as well as being one of the region’s most culturally iconic cities.

Economy

Nagpur is currently one of the fastest-growing cities in India and has several burgeoning industries. In the past, Nagpur lost much of it’s standing in the world of commerce to its rival cities of Pune and Mumbai. However, of late the city has experienced something of a renaissance. Recently Nagpur was ranked as the 11th most competitive city in India by the Institute for Competitiveness. The city has become important in the areas of banking, logistics and IT in particular. Nagpur is an important banking centre due to the presence of the Reserve Bank of India in the city. The bank has two branches in the city, one of which houses India’s entire stock of gold. At the centre of the logistics industry is Nagpur’s Multi-modal International Cargo Hub, one of the largest development projects in the country. Nagpur’s central presence in India makes it an ideal logistics centre and the organizers of the project envision it’s rail and road connections furthering it’s success. A special economic zone has been created around the cargo hub which features more free-market tax laws to encourage business. Other major bulwarks of the city’s economy are the Bajaj Auto Group’s manufacturing facilities and the Butibori Industrial Area.

Tourism & Culture

Nagpur does not have a large tourism industry and is not visited as often as other major cities in the country. However for visitors that do find their way to the city there is plenty to see and do. The Nagpur Central Museum, founded in 1863, is one of the most respected museums in the region and has a host of displays and artefacts from the city’s storied history. The Raman Science Centre is another respected institution and features a 133 seat planetarium. Additionally, the Maharajbagh Zoo is one of the oldest and best zoos in the country, and a new safari park is being planned for the area. Nagpur is also nicknamed the ‘Tiger Capital of India’ because of a large number of tiger sanctuaries in the area. The region that Nagpur is located in is also famous for its local cuisine, known as Saoji. It is famously spicy and uses black pepper, coriander, and cinnamon cloves. All these spices can also be found in the food markets that are found in every corner of the city.

Transportation

Like most Indian cities Nagpur has an excellent public transportation system. The city is served by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport which handles approximately 4,000 passengers per day and connects to 12 domestic destinations. The airport boasts the busiest air traffic control room in India as more than 300 flights pass over the airport every day. Nagpur benefits from excellent rail connections with 160 trains stopping at Nagpur. A full 65 of these are daily trains which either originate or terminate at Nagpur. The city itself has a comprehensive bus system that runs to all the suburbs in the city as well as the airport.
