The city was developed by James and Robert Irvine along with their friend James McFadden. The three realized the potential of the new settlement after in 1870 a ship called The Vaquero successfully navigated through the lower and upper bay of what is now Newport. The town was connected to LA by the Pacific Electric Railway in 1905 and was finally incorporated in 1906. The population of the area grew rapidly with its three artificial islands quickly being developed. The 1920s, in particular, saw a construction boom in Newport Beach, with hundreds of houses being built and infrastructure substantially improved and extended.
