History & Geography

Aptly-named Pleasanton is a suburb in the San Francisco Bay Area that is generally regarded as one of the most desirable places to live in California. Adjacent to both Livermore and Dublin, Pleasanton is nestled in the shadow of Pleasanton Ridge approximately 25 miles east of Oakland in the north of the state. Formerly the town was named Alisal and had a reputation in the early 19th century as a refuge of bandits and highwaymen. The town was renamed Pleasanton after Union cavalry commander Major General Alfred Pleasonton – a spelling mistake by a US Postal Office clerk resulted in its current form. After it was renamed the town shed its lawless reputation and became a prosperous farming town. Eventually, wealthy residents of Oakland, San Francisco and other cities in the area migrated to Pleasanton to retire or build weekend homes. Today Pleasanton is ranked as the wealthiest mid-size city in the US by the Census Bureau.

Economy

Pleasanton was a fairly quiet farming town well into the 20th century though failed to prosper in the middle to late century. Around the 1980s Pleasanton experienced a major boom off the back of the construction of a number of business parks in the area. A number of corporations have since established their headquarters in the town. Both Safeway and Kaiser Permanente are major employers in Pleasanton. Other companies with an operation in the area include Sage Software, Cisco Systems, Symantec, EMC Corporation and BMC Software. Pleasanton has also become a major retail centre and has several large, popular shopping malls. Primary among these is the Stoneridge Shopping Centre. The town also has a popular entertainment district with a range of restaurants, bars and clubs which attract visitors from all over the state. A recent poll by the US Census Bureau showed that the median income in Pleasanton is USD 101,022, making it the wealthiest city of its size in the country.

Tourism & Culture

Pleasanton does not have the tourism industry that its neighbours of San Francisco and Oakland do, however, the town does see a fair amount of visitors, attracted by its picturesque surroundings and lively nightlife. Many buildings have been preserved in downtown Pleasanton, which is a mix of architectural styles. Among those present are Gothic Revival, Pioneer, Colonial Revival, Queen Anne and Italianate. The weekly Farmers Market is a popular affair and routinely attracts visitors from San Francisco and elsewhere. Pleasanton also hosts a number of parades during the year on important dates like Christmas, Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Transportation

Pleasanton is the site of the eastern terminus of the Bay Area Rapid Transport (BART) system. The town itself is also served by the WHEELS bus transit system. Additionally, the Altamont Commuter Express service stops at the Pleasanton Station which is walking distance from downtown. The nearest international airport to Pleasanton is SFO.
