Construction work is well underway at the site where the World Trade Center collapsed in 2001, and American developers are working hard to attract Chinese companies to the resulting areas of New York office space.

The new World Trade Center is set to be completed in 2013, and at 1,776 feet tall, it will be the highest structure in the city. Aware of the structure’s significance to the city of New York as a whole, Chinese firms are taking a serious interest in relocating to the site.
Douglas Durst, a developer on the project, told the Associated Press that there has been “tremendous interest” among Chinese businesses about the prospect of occupying offices at the new tower. “Everybody is going to know where they are when they say they’re in the World Trade Center,” he noted.
A number of agreements have already been reached for office space in the tower in the heart of New York, including a 200,000-square-foot rental deal with the Beijing-based Vantone Industrial.
In total, some three million square feet of office space is to be delivered at the new World Trade Center and Chinese companies are expected to account for a sizeable proportion of the associated lettings.
Some of America’s biggest employers have also been active in the New York office space market in recent weeks, with Bloomberg planning to add significantly to its existing stock in the city and Google having acquired a 15-storey building in the Chelsea area of Manhattan.
Editor’s notes: The ‘One World Trade Center’, also known as the Freedom Tower, officially opened in November 2014 and, at 1,776 feet tall, has been the tallest building in North America and the Western Hemisphere since it topped out in 2013.
The height of the building was specifically chosen to mark the year that the Declaration of Independece was signed.
Leasing deals were signed with a number of high-profile tenants, including Conde Nast, which rented over 1 million square feet at the property.
Flexible office space and workspace solutions were made available at the iconic tower from international office providers Servcorp and New York office space providers Durst Ready
Both provide a range of solutions, including furnished and equipped private office suites on short leases, meeting rooms, and coworking spaces.
In June 2026, it was reported that the global financial services firm Ameriprise Financial had renewed its 38,000-square-foot lease at the property.
News of this deal came after the report that the One World Trade Center had reached a record leasing level of 97 per cent let, following deals with Norm Ai and W Media.
