Chinese firms eye New York’s most iconic offices

[Published February 2011 and updated May 2023] An increasing number of Chinese businesses are considering taking-up office space in what will soon be one of the most iconic commercial buildings in the world.

Construction work is well underway at the site where the World Trade Center collapsed in 2001 and American developers are working hard to attract Chinese companies to the resulting areas of New York office space.

The new World Trade Center is set to be completed in 2013 and at 1,776 feet tall it will be the highest structure in the city. Aware of the significance of the structure to the city of New York as a whole, Chinese firms are taking a serious interest in making a move to the site.

Douglas Durst, a developer on the project, told the Associated Press that there has been “tremendous interest” among Chinese businesses about the prospect of occupying offices at the new tower. “Everybody is going to know where they are when they say they’re in the World Trade Center,” he noted.

A number of agreements have already been reached in relation to office space at the tower in the heart of New York, including a 200,000 sq ft rental deal involving the Beijing-based Vantone Industrial company.

In total, some three million square feet of office space is to be delivered at the new World Trade Center and Chinese companies are expected to account for a sizeable proportion of the associated lettings.

Some of America’s biggest employers have also been active in the New York office space market in recent weeks, with Bloomberg planning to add significantly to its existing stock in the city and Google having acquired a 15-storey building in the Chelsea area of Manhattan.

Editor’s notes: The One World Trade Centre, also known as the Freedom Tower officially opened in November 2014 and, at 1,776 feet tall, has been the tallest building in North America and the Western Hemisphere since it stepped out in 2013.

Leasing deals were signed with a number of high-profile tenants including Conde Nast which rented over 1 million square feet at the property.
